LAUNA D. ROMOFF
Webster's Dictionary defines an artist as, "One who creates objects of beauty". Funny, growing up, I always equated a good artist with one who could draw. I could not be an artist, I assumed, because I could not draw.

    It was not until I
was fifty-one that I I took
acollage class and my
life changed. It is
through this medium
that my inner voice, my
strengths, my vulner-
abilities came bursting
forth.I have found my
passion. I consider my
art, in the medium of
collage, a re-composi-
tion. The forgotten and
unwanted are orches-
trated into a familiar but
newborn synthesis that, I hope, will
evoke in others a desire to connect to
it.
It is interesting to me that people
look into my work, not directly at it, just
as I do when I create it. I find my mate-
rials everywhere, which I combine by
instinct onto the canvas. The result is
at once personal and familiar because
the materials used are common and
easy to recognize. This allows the
viewer to identify more easily with the
composition. For me collage has been
a spiritual experience. It has given me
a sense of peace and centeredness. As I fill the blank canvas, I dedicate a part of my soul to my audience. The number of awards I have pinned on my wall are a reminder of the gift I have found and the gift I give. My success stems not from the many pieces I have sold in my short career, but from the fact that the people who have seen my work have wanted to have it for their own. In seeking out and incorporating into my pieces that which is thrown away, I believe I have learned to see the beauty of the discarded and turn it into art.
